Bbc Braised Mince Beef and Onion

This was mediocre. It just was not as good as my grandmother's was growing up and I suppose I expected a lot more out of a meal that takes so many hours to make.

Pretty good recipe. Ingredients, especially the meat, were inexpensive. Instead of baking the meat, I cooked it in a crockpot (high setting, 6 hours) after searing it. Meat turned out very nice and tender. I had never cooked turnips before but they ended up to be a lovely addition. I also added diced potato to make the dish more filling.

I made a mistake and did not read through the entire recipe before making...which was a mistake because of how long this dish takes. In the end, I cut the time shortly and just left it in the juice, serving it with brown rice. Would make again, just would start cooking much earlier. Also, I don't have a dutch oven, so I used an oven-safe skillet with a lid.

Not anything spectacular but not bad. I added some extra garlic to the pot and sprinkled the beef with some crushed rosemary and garlic powder in an effort to inject more flavor but it still wasn't anything spectacular. The beef did come out moist and tender but I feel that for the amount of time put into cooking it I expected something more. I probably won't repeat it but it was good for just one night of dinner.

This was very good. I served it with mashed potatoes and garlic bread. The left overs were even better!

Although I was a skeptic at first, this recipe was well worth the effort. If you're like me & are happy w/ a pot roast from the crockpot, this one is worth the extra work effort. You could not detect the a beer flavor in the gravy. I served w/ a side of brown rice & a salad. It's a definite keeper.

This recipe takes awhile but it is worth it. The turnips can be replaced with potatos if you wish (couldn't find good turnips). I am a new mom and my mom never taught me how to cook, but I made this dish and I was really proud of it.

This recipe is fantastic. My family loves it so much that there weren't enough for seconds. Next time I'll double my ingredients. to feed 5.

This was fantastic though the sauce was a little bland. I added more salt, pepper, and onion powder, and used a sweet potato instead of turnips. I also added frozen peas.

This was the best I've ever made....the dark beer really was better than using anything else I've used in this type of recipe. We bought a chuck roast on sale and halved it...I'm making it again today. I substituted potatoes for turnips too...but added extra carrots.

Found it very bland

This was the best pot roast I have ever made. I used an inexpensive dark beer because I could not find the suggested one. And I added sliced mushrooms. The turnips were interesting, the first time I had ever used them. They held up better than potatoes for the long cooking. Another cooking light favorite!

Really like this one and plan to make again. Would work for company or everyday depending on sides. I plan to double the quantity - easy to make (mostly chopping and braising in the oven) so why not have more meals? My husband also prefers potatoes to turnips, but I like the turnips so we'll have to compromise!

This was wonderful! My husband isn't one for pot roast, but we didn't have enough between the two of us, with a 1-lb roast! The second time I made it I used a 2-lb roast with the same measurements. Still came out great. I felt the cook times were too long. But, I used an enameled cast-iron dutch oven, so maybe that's why it came out overdone the first time. Don't be put off by the turnips; you can always sub potatoes!

This is a really good roast. I'm not a fan of beer in my food, but I used a Warsteiner Dunkel, and honestly wouldn't have known it was in there. It was very similar to the pot roast I make with wine. I enjoyed using the turnips since I'm always looking to add new veggies to my diet :)

This was delicious! I replaced the turnips with potatoes and cooked slightly less than the recipe calls for (30 min less in first step and 20 min less in last step) to ensure that I didn't overcook the meat (which I am often accused of!). Everything was tender and juicy. The perfect meal for the fall/winter seasons!

This was awesome! Put it over egg noodles to absorb some of the great juice. FYI, you need to add a lot more salt (and seasonings generally) than CL calls for. I added more salt to the broth and it was perfect.

I'm shocked at the not so great reviews? I did follow it exactly and it was perfect! I mean there wasn't a drop left...gone! So good, soooooooo EASY. It's going to be a keeper for our family. I'm usually an Ina Garten and Giada recipe maker...this is quality with ease and a bit healthier! YUM!! I agree next time I may use pot. instead of turnips but that's just personal pref. The turnips were good. :)

We followed the recipe exactly and loved it. The turnips were wonderful. The meat was very tender and flavorful. We will definitely make this again. Great fall meal!

I used Negro Modelo dark beer and my family loved the results. It is more of a broth so we used crusty Italian bread to soak up the excess. We like garlic so I'm sure I added a bit more than the recipe asked. I also threw in two small leeks I had in the fridge. As for the turnips, they tasted slightly bitter and my family didn't like that. I'm substituting potatoes this weekend for company.

This recipe absolutely did not come together well. We used a quality dark beer much lighter than a stout, but combined with the turnips the overall flavor was way too musty tasting. It managed to somehow overwhelm the beef flavor but still be generally bland. I gave it two rather than one star, however, because the beef was very tender and moist. I would use their technique again, but using other liquid and seasonings.

Not impressed with this recipe. The beef came out tender, but the broth was not very flavorful. I also didn't care for the turnip. Overall, it was bland.

Delicious! The beef and vegetables were all wonderfully flavorful. Turnips were new for us; they do taste a lot like potatoes in this recipe, though not quite the same. But if I didn't have turnips available, I'd substitute potatoes without thinking twice. The broth is great but pretty sloppy; next time, I'll probably make it into gravy.

Loved the beer-braised beef. It was very tender and flavorful. Next time, I'll skip the turnips and use potatoes instead. The recipe is easy to put together but braises for 3 hours so I wouldn't recommend starting dinner @ 6pm like I did.
